Providing Individual and Group Therapy

"The middle is messy, but it's also where the magic happens."
Brene Brown

If you're feeling messy, overwhelmed, trying hard to adjust to a life transition but just can't seem to get a foothold, therapy can help. Wellness means more than bouncing back from challenge, it can include bouncing forward with new growth, greater insight, increased resilience and hope despite all the pain and bad days. We challenge ourselves to grow more hopeful, to grow stronger, kinder, and with a belief that growth starts with us.

For 40 years I have worked with adults who experience high stress, loss, and other challenging and unexpected transitions, to regain their emotional footing, integrate the challenge and re-configure their lives with new awareness of their own strengths and hope. At times, this can be 'simple but not easy' and that is where therapy, consultation or coaching can make a difference.

One of the most important aspects of effective therapy is the trust between a person and the therapist they work with. Contact me if you would like to see if there is a trust connection on which to base some theraputic work.

About Me

I graduated from Boston University School of Social Work with concentrations in individual and group therapy. As an LICSW; book author (But Dad! A Survival Guide for Single Fathers of Tween and Teen Daughters), author of a column on single parenting (Vermont Woman newspaper) and clinical supervisor of graduate MSW interns, Psychiatry, and Family Practice residents I believe that wellness, balance and support are requirements for getting through challenges effectively.  Therapy focuses on growth in the face of stress(cancer, infertility, traumatic injury, depression/anxiety disorders), significant or difficult life transitions (marriage, divorce, parenting shifts) and re-establishing and strengthening individual and relationship wellness.

I believe times of pain, confusion and stress are times of opportunity to revisit and reignite what we may have forgotten about ourselves - our strengths, goals, values.  I believe in the human spirit's drive to thrive, not simply survive challenges. I will support you in making healthy decisions for a life well lived. I believe that two things can be true at once - There is great pain, AND we can get through it by not just bounding back but  bouncing forward because we grew.

If you don't feel hopeful right now, I will hold hope for you. I will support and guide you when you need it and celebrate your growth.

Short term Counseling, Consulting or Coaching

Sometimes we just need an objective person to bounce our thoughts and experiences off so we can chart our optimal next move. In these situations, we seek clarity, objectivity and action plans to identify resources, new ways of thinking or new paths to pursue. It might only take a few focused sessions to send you on your way with some tools, insights, and clarity to move forward.

Individual Therapy

When issues are tangled and old pattens of understanding or action are no longer helpful, more regular sessions may be most helpful. In these moments, our focus on expanding options, connection, and adjusting the perspective will support positive internal and external change to fit your life or relationship goals, conflict resolution or adaptative understanding, growth and change. Our focus will be on moving forward rather than living in past difficult moments.

Group Therapy

We are herd animals. How we listen, connect and participate in meaningful interactions and relationships has a great impact on our wellness. Groups offer support and growth in the context of a common relatable issue (i.e. partners of chronically ill family member; transitioning relationships; living with active grief). Group members offer insight, support, lived wisdom and structure while enhancing our connectedness to ourselves and others.
